Sports at Smarden 2021/22
Rawlinson Run:
September this year saw the welcome return of the Rawlinson Run. Seven members of years 3 & 4 took part for one of our first inter-school competitions covid. Although we didn't win any medals this year, we all took part in an amazing event and were very proud to be complimented for our behaviour and good sportsmanship.
Swimming:
We currently provide swimming to Years 3 & 4 for six weeks each a year. All our pupils head to Ewe Swim for lessons as part of our statutory duty to enable all children to leave school able to swim at least 25m. These lessons take place between January - March 2022.
Y5 Football Festival - Ashford United:
We took a team of Y5 pupils to Homelands Stadium in Ashford for a five-a-side tournament with around 20 other teams. We did ourselves proud and managed to make the quarter-finals! For our first team outing we were thrilled to have done so well and can't wait for the next match!
Ashford United Football Tournament:
Smarden excel and reach quarter finals!
On a wet and windy afternoon a team of Year 5 footballers entered a 5 a side tournament of 16 teams.
Our squad was made up of 8 players.
Group Game 1 v Repton Manor Won 1-0
Our first game was against Repton Manor and we ran out comfortable 1-0 winners after some excellent play by everyone involved. We used a diamond formation with Will in goal. Bottom of the diamond was Tommy, on the left was Danny and up top we had Freddy W. Goalkeeper Will never had much to do as the players kept the ball and didn't give away much possession.
Our goal was scored by Freddy W after he slotted home a sublime pass from Danny.
Group Game 2 v Ashford Oaks Drew 1-1
With a win under our belts going into match 2 of 3 we rotated the squad and introduced Willoe, Cam and Freddy K to the tournament. This was also a great test at tournament level for everyone to get involved in. Again Freddy W scored with another excellent effort.
A tight game ensued and with Willoe almost scoring a winning goal we ended up drawing 1-1 which was a fair result.
Group Game 3 v Willesborough Lost 0-1
Our last game of the group we again rotated the squad and we thought we had done enough to get a draw. Our concentration lapsed for the only time in the tournament and the Willesborough forward took full advantage and scored the winner
Quarter Final v Aldington Lost 0-1
Even though our team was made up of Year 5's this tournament was aimed at Years 5 and 6 combined. Our Y6 was away on another school trip and you could see that the opposition were physically bigger and stronger than our exclusive Y5 team. On saying that our team are technically all very comfortable on the ball and we were getting our way back in to the game, after being 1-0 down, but time had run out and we were gallant losers.
Summary from the coach
From my perspective I feel we have a lot of talent to go a lot further in competitions like this. As you can see from the results, we were never beaten by more than one goal.
Well done everyone and I look forward to future competitions where I believe we can go a step further.
Ashford Prep Cross Country Run:
‘Autumn springs into action!
All the pupils put in tremendous effort and were cheered on by their excited parents.
Autumn earned the medal of ‘Best Effort’ for producing an outstanding performance after finishing 4th in the girls Y3/4 race
I’m sure we can produce more runners for next years competition and it could hopefully take home a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal
Well done everyone!
